Station square Ruurlo

Pedestrian walkway and regeneration of station area

On behalf of ProRail Jan Kuipers Nunspeet created a metamorphosis of the station square in Ruurlo.
The center piece being a pedestrian walkway across the railway tracks. The reorganization of the square consisted of a new bus platform, a new commuter square, a back square with parking spaces and renovating the road. The public space is furnished with bicycle shelters, bicycle parking systems, benches, a heated shelter with seating, fencing along the railway tracks, street lightning and plants. This project was commissioned based on a UAV-GC 2005 contract. Kirsten Colenbrander of Royal Haskoning Architecten designed the pedestrian walkway.

Technical specifications

  • Length app. 40 m, width ranging from 2,4 m to 8 m.
  • Nett height train underpass 5,6 m, total height walkway 8 m.
  • Main supporting structure made out of 2 steel trusses.
  • Trusses constructed from 2-way bended profiles 2.
  • Rafters connected by steel profiles and sheet metal.
  • Steel construction in accordance with NEN-EN-1090-1.
  • Hot-dip galvanized, NEN-EN-ISO 1461, and finished with a dual coat of graffiti-resistant powder coating.
  • Stairs and landings manufactured from FSC® hardwood, supplied with antiskid strips.
  • Construction clad with Platowood, treated with fire retardant and graffiti-resistant coating
  • Foundation: poured concrete abutments on concrete injection piles.
  • Stainless steel railing with integrated LED-lightning.

Working safely on the railways

The installation of this project had to meet the strict requirements that have been set in the “Veiligheids Checklist Aannemers” (safety checklist of contractors) (VCA**) and BTR (Branch oriented explanation on rail infrastructure).
To prevent unnecessary hinder to the rail service the construction of the bridge was broken up into three separate elements and the assembly of all parts was tested at the premises of Jan Kuipers Nunspeet.
